North Island

New Zealand

New Zealand's North Island is filled with history, magnificent beaches and awesome farmlands with interesting and awe inspiring geothermal wonders.  Additionally, if you are into cultural events you can visit the Maori culture (indigenous people) who came to the Island more than 1,000 years ago.

North Island has a rich and interesting history that reflects a unique mix of Maori and European cultures.  The Maori were the first to arrive on the island, journeying in canoes from Polynesia.  It was a Dutchman, Avel Tasman, who first sited the country but the British who first colonized New Zealand.  In 1840, the Treaty of Waitangi was established between the British Crown and Maori.  It solidified the British presence on the Island by establishing British law and creating New Zealand's founding document.   The building where the treaty was signed is still standing and is located on North Island's Waitangi Treaty Grounds.

The region is also the home to the city of Auckland.  The city is full of culture with wonderful things to see and experience.  In the background you get a feel for the Polynesian culture, while being submerged in a city filled with tantalizing food, wine, and shopping.

North Island has a variety of wonderful activities to experience, beautiful beaches and islands to explore, scenic landscapes to hike and view, historic buildings and landmarks to visit, and off course outrageous food and drink to indulge.
