Tasmania
Australia
Tasmania is an island state located about 150 miles from the coast of southeastern Australia, separated by Bass Strait. It’s a very mountainous island home to many peaks, the tallest of which is Mount Ossa at 5300 ft. It has been nicknamed the “Island of Inspiration” due to its largely unspoiled natural environment that features dramatic coastlines, temperate rain forests, sparkling blue lakes and rugged mountains. Most of the island is set aside as World heritage sites, national parks and preserved wilderness areas. Although aboriginal people were the island’s original inhabitants, it was discovered in 1642 by a Dutch seafarer, Abel Tasman. He named it Van Diemen’s Land after the governor of the Dutch East Indies company, who sent him on his voyage, but it was renamed as Tasmania in 1856.
Nature and wildlife lovers will delight in the beautiful landscapes, diverse wildlife and unique animals -some of which can only be found in Tasmania. The infamous Tasmanian Devil is not just a Looney Tunes character! It’s actually one such species that can only be found in Tasmania, and is the largest carnivorous marsupial in the world. They got their nickname from early European settlers who witnessed their cranky disposition, and bad temper including baring their sharp teeth, spine-chilling growls and screams when threatened or provoked. You can see them for yourself in several wildlife parks, sanctuaries and zoos in Tasmania, or if you’re lucky in the wild!
No visit to Tasmania is complete without a stop in Hobart, its capital city. Hobart was founded in 1804 as a convict, penal colony and is the second oldest city in Australia after Sydney. Take a walk along its iconic waterfront, visit one of its many art galleries and museums, or enjoy dining at one of many award winning restaurants for a meal to remember. There truly is something for everyone to enjoy in Hobart!
